Lake

Canyon Lake's charm is captured by its exclusive 400-acre private lake, a jewel among Southern California's gated communities. This unique body of water offers residents a year-round playground for fishing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, and leisurely boating, set against a backdrop of stunning vistas that inspire both tranquility and adventure.

The Canyon Lake POA leases the surface rights of the lake from the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD), ensuring that this natural treasure remains an exclusive benefit for its members. The shores of the lake are dotted with picturesque parks, dedicated swimming areas, and secluded fishing spots. Amenities such as sandy beaches, a professional slalom course, a jump lagoon, and a convenient gas dock enhance the recreational experience. Additionally, the Canyon Lake POA actively stocks the lake with catfish and bass, complementing the existing population of crappie and bluegill, ensuring anglers always have a fulfilling day of catch-and-release fishing.

History

The history of Canyon Lake is deeply intertwined with the construction of the Railroad Canyon Dam, which stands as a cornerstone of the area's development. Completed in 1929, the dam was initially constructed to provide irrigation and water storage solutions for the region. The resultant lake, nestled within the rugged terrain, slowly filled with rainwater channeling down from the San Jacinto Mountains and the expansive surrounding valleys.

For the first couple of decades, the lake's water levels fluctuated greatly with seasonal rains. This unpredictability was resolved in 1955 when an agreement was made between EVMWD and Temescal Water Company to introduce a more reliable water supply to the reservoir. This pivotal deal not only stabilized water levels but also transformed Canyon Lake into a more sustainable and recreational oasis.

Over the years, Canyon Lake has evolved from a mere reservoir to a vibrant community centerpiece. It now supports not only local ecology but also provides a multitude of recreational opportunities that enhance the quality of life for its residents.
